Invokana Lawsuits

FDA-approved drugs for treating low blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes are known as sodium-glucose contransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, and have been said to possibly lead to a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA is characterized as excessive blood acid levels, and a number of manufacturers – including Johnson & Johnson who produce Invokana – sell these medications that are associated with harmful side effects.

There are over 900 lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals in federal court that are related to Invokana injuries. The primary legal issue with Invokana is that plaintiffs are claiming that the drug caused them to suffer amputation, kidney damage, or ketoacidosis – but the manufacturer failed to properly warn doctors or patients of the potential side effects.

Invokana Injuries and Side Effects

The most serious risks caused by Invokana include:

  • Amputation – Clinical trials found that patients who took Invokana were twice as likely to suffer a lower-body amputation as those taking a placebo – with toe and mid-foot amputations being the most common. Users of this medication should watch for signs of increased tenderness, sores, and infections in their lower extremities.
  • Kidney Failure – A person is considered to be in kidney failure when the kidneys no longer function without the use of dialysis or a kidney transplant. They help filter waste from the blood, maintain electrolyte balance, and produce red blood cells. Kidney failure can cause weakness, shortness of breath, abnormal heart rhythm, and sudden death.
  • Ketoacidosis – A result of high levels of ketones in the body, ketoacidosis can cause a patient to suffer a diabetic coma, extended hospitalization, and even death. Ketoacidosis occurs when there is insufficient insulin in the body, causing the body to break down fat as a source of energy, which results in a buildup of toxic acids in the bloodstream.
